The Gift by Cecelia Ahren
I am biased when it comes to work by Cecelia Ahren because she makes it to my
prestigious list of favorite brilliant writers. Her style is simplistic, modern and human.
This is one of my favorite parts in the book:
"I'm Gabriel, but everyone who knows me calls me Gabe.""I'm Lou,but everyone who knows me calls me a prick."
The Review:
The Gift is a Christmas story that talks of the importance of time and how less of it we actually have.It entwines the life of Lou,a competitive office guy who is too busy to be with family, and Gabe,a beggar who used to sit outside Lou's office building. Lou pities Gabe's plight and gets him a small job in his office as a Christmas gift.Even though Lou is more accomplished than Gabe materialistically, he is gnawed by envy at Gabe's ease with having people like him. Gabe helps Lou manage his family and professional life by giving him a pill that splits him into two Lou's.Cec's books always have a magical element to them. Its her genre. The book tends to get a little preachy in parts but heartwarming in others.Whether Gabe is an ordinary man or an angel is unclear. I feel she rambles with her words towards the end.Or maybe the book was too complex for me to understand and holds a deeper meaning. Any which way, it makes a great read.
