I am usually late. But even in my race against time, I like taking that quick glance at the front-page of a newspaper, to know all the exciting and horrific things going on in the world. Imagine my plight when instead f seeing a news-story,I see an ad for 'lala building' on the cover. It is the only piece of 'news' that sticks with me (ah, an advertisers delight.) Does anyone else get irritated when they see an ad on the first page of a newspaper? For illustrative purpose only (Don't sue me,man,) The problem,ladies and gentlemen, is simple. Opening the second page is a hassle. The trend of front-page ads has gone on for a while now but I still get annoyed every time I see it. Big newspapers like Times of India and the Hindu get these ads. We can wag our fingers at these newspapers all we want. But we need to understand the reasons behind the ads before we do it. Saturday is Film Club day! My dear insomniac friend spent the night searching for the perfect film to inaugurate the club. We watched Six Shooter. It won an Oscar in 2006. An absurd movie about death and all his friends, six shooter will make you laugh and grimace at the same time. The movie starts off with a man in the hospital looking at the body of his dead wife and bringing a picture of David (their pet rabbit), for her to..erm..feel better. Following a man's misery at the death of his wife, the film uses the space a train compartment to show how different people cope with death. We find a couple who have just lost a child and a young man whose mother has been murdered. The wife takes the death severely whereas the young lad seems barely bothered . The young man is an inappropriate chatterbox who shamelessly jokes about the death of the baby.The dialogues are in colloquial Irish.The film will never leave you feeling bored. I went to Pavilion mall a few days back.It is a place right out of a fairy tale. More truthfully, it is right out of a fashion magazine. A monument dedicated to fashion. Gucci to your left and Prada to your right. The heart flutters at the clothes,bags,shoes put on display. It is the building of the expensive. It is where angry rich wives come to teach their husbands a lesson. I assume that the buyers and angry wives are few and far between. Let me first clarify that this article is about the progression of cartoons in India and not about food.  Being a 90's kid, I have no qualms about stating that we had better cartoons than any generation before or since. Those were the good old days when Cartoon Network screened from 5.30 a.m till 5.30 p.m. That is 12 hours worth of exposure to American sensibilities. We became used to that kind of humour and understanding of the world. Although cartoons like Mickey Mouse or Tom and Jerry had a universal appeal, some like Johnny Bravo were distinctly American. We still remember you! The cartoons of this generation are a little different.  Though there are American cartoons available, they seem like cheap imitation jewelery in comparison to those from the golden era of the 90's. When I am short of cash ,which is close to never because I am terrific at Living On Little ('LOL' I call it), I stay away from movie halls,malls, book stores and hypermarkets. When I have extra money, I feel consumerist tendencies flowing through my blood. It is this beautiful evil temptation to splurge and make your wallet feel lighter. It's not the question of what I should buy. It's just that I should buy.Period. So.. I bought this book called The Comedians by Graham Greene. This sounds like a fun book, I said to myself. I watched the movie Playing for Keeps today. Not because I'm a Gerard Butler fan, but because Life of Pi costed 600 bucks while this costed half of that and we had time to kill. So what's the story? Gerard Butler plays a soccer legend. His young lover is Jessica Beil. They are hopelessly in love, they get married and procreate. But that is not the story. The story is that his glory days are over and he screwed things up and didn't give a crap about his wife or son and is back after many years to make amends. But one problem. She is getting married to another guy (James Tupper) and this one has been faithful,dutiful and responsible with her and her son for three whole years without asking for much in return. Butler wants to show that he has finally become an adult so takes up a job as a soccer coach for the soccer team that his 9year old son plays in. My friend (who is dying of body ache right now) just happend to download those movies through her magic sources right at the time I was going to meet her.
